Our first long look at NBC’s upcoming horror drama HANNIBAL certainly suggests viewers will ingest a steady diet of violent crimes, bloody gore and cannibalism. A glass of chianti, anyone?
The premise will sound familiar: criminal profiler Graham (Hugh Dancy) is enlisted by FBI Agent Jack Crawford (Laurence Fishburne) to identify and track a serial killer called “The Ripper” who has a penchant for particularly gruesome murder and displaying of his victims. Of course, who better to enlist for help with this bloody business than everyone’s favorite gourmet psychiatrist, Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Mads Mikkelsen).
The series seems to borrow some style elements from various forensic-mystery shows like CSI-Wherever, a dash of MEDIUM’s rare empathetic mind powers, and a heaping helping of eerie, mind-bending imagery from the likes of AMERICAN HORROR STORY. A new show could do worse, but my money rests on Mikkelsen carrying the series on his talented back and creepy-crawly acting skills. It looks like EP Bryan Fuller has some guts and wants to take on the more extreme cable competitors on AMC, FX and even HBO.
If HANNIBAL dwindles into a routine crime-solving episodic, I’ll just have bread and water, thanks. But if Fuller really unleashes Mikkelsen to add both flavor and nutritional value to his interpretation of Lecter, then I’m hungry for more. Are you drooling over the show’s prospects yet, horror fans?
